4. Fuzzy Carter (Mark), Guitar Vocals
5. Mike Doyle, Guitar Vocal

We are stoked! We have a ton of new songs in the mix, but nothing finished to present to you today. So since it's Thanksgiving, here's one of my favorite Thanksgiving movies, "Alices Restaurant" with Arlo Guthrie on YouTube:

To celebrate our first show with our new lead guitar player Fuzzy Carter, (not his real name, we use alias to keep the governments of Zimbabwe and Vanuatu from tracking him down, as well as some girl named Billy Jean who says he is the one, but the kid is not his son.)

We are releasing a track we recorded for the album, but it didn't make the cut. So here it is as as a free download.

We present to you "Friends".

It is also on our reverbnation page

We are making a fully professional video for "Rider" but we need your help.

We've been keeping quiet about this, but a production company comprised of people that make videos for famous rock stars (Bon Jovi, John Mayer, Blink 182 you name it) have volunteered to make us a video for Rider.
They are going to do it for free, however there are always costs to make a video of this caliber, so we have set up a gofundme account, with all kinds of thank you gifts including a custom song just for you, to help divert some of the inevitable costs.

To celebrate, we have also set up "Rider" as a free download this week only.
Thank you for your support,
Soul of the River

A new video for a new song not on the album

Throw that bowl of cereal across the room, you better clear the table 'cause it's 'bout to get funky in here!

Here's a video of a performance of a new song not on the album, "Popcorn"

This jam's so funky the bass will slap you outta your chair, and knock your mustache clear uptown.

Put on some headphones, computer speakers will not cut it.

You need to hear the funky bass that will make Skrillex go back to school and hold him back four grades.

If you have a cool name for this song, let us know, we just called it "Popcorn" because we had to call it something.

Here it is:

We also had a great review of the album on Improvization Nation Magazine here:

Steve broke his thumb, so we won't be playing any shows for a while, however he has been playing keyboards at rehearsal and we are coming up with tons of great new songs!

Also Facebook is making us pay to promote our posts if we want more than 10% of you to see them.

In order for all of our fans to see one facebook post, it would cost us $70. In order to stay in touch with us you need to:

1) Go to our page.

2) Hover your mouse over where it says "Liked" and click on "Add to Interests Lists" Then you will see all of our posts on your wall.

Our new game plan and Riverside Magazine

We realize most of you all live nowhere near Southern California and won't be able to catch a show, so we've decided to focus more on recording and videos than shows. We feel like you guys are missing out, so we plan on recording 30-40 songs a year, putting the best 10 on an album, and giving out the rest as free downloads.

We were featured in this month's Riverside Magazine and we are stoked! The article is about halfway down (pages 34 qnd 35), you can read it online here.

We made a 30 second jingle for the Philler podcast. If you want it, it is available as a free download here: The Philler is a Phish related podcast, that they plan on doing a Soul of the River special down the road.

Also we've gotten some airplay on Sirus/XM radio as the opener for the Shades of K show, and it looks like we'll be on again April 20 at Midnight (Eastern) (9pm pacific) If you dig Phish, check out the Philler Podcast.

Thanks for your support, Soul of the River

Thank you all for your support, we have sold way more albums than we could have expected! We're struggling just to keep them on the shelves! And if you haven't bought a copy yet, we still have copies left. The links are below. Tell your friends, tell your Cat, every copy sold goes towards making album #2.

Also, Jeff Moody our original drummer put together a hot rod that was featured in the January issue of Rod and Custom magazine. (Not the same hot rod featured in our "My Rebecca" video, although Jeff built that one also). Congrats Jeff!

Do us a favor and leave us some good reviews on the album on iTunes, Amazon or CD Baby, Thank you all for your support!

4 New Things
Hey Everyone!
I hope things are well, theres a couple things we wanted to let you know:

1. We made videos for "Sweet as the Sky" and "As I Sing Here" I like As I Sing the best. They're low budget, but since we bought the Soul of the River private jet, we've had to tighten our belts around here. The videos are here on Myspace or our Youtube link is:

2. We're playing "Jam Fest" (formerly Jamboree Days) in Crestline CA this Saturday July 3 around 1:30pm free. Then we move all the beer and bands inside the theater and we play again at 7:00. See the "Shows" list for more info.

3. We had a great article written about us in the German Wasser-Prawda magazine! The article in German is at:

And the english translation is on our myspace blog at:

4. The album is mastered which means besides artwork and duplication, its done! We'll release it shortly (we think).

Thanks for digging our tunes!

Great article about is in German Wasser-Prawda Magazine!
Nathan Norgel of the German Wasser-Prawda Magazine wrote a great article about us. It is in German, so I used Google Translations to translate to english so the trasnlation didn't come out perfect, but you get the jist. Here's the link to the actual article in German.
Here... See More's the Google German-English translation:
We welcome assistance in any form, write Soul of the River on their homepage. The band from the Riverside, California says she would be completely broke. I do not know how seriously they mean. Because of their music can not lie there. The Californian will appeal not only surfers.
The trio, sometime in June 2004 from a wild song-writing session was created, you can sort, roughly speaking in the radio rock / jam band-drawer. You know: the driving bass lines, drums that although much of rock comes from, but can also lie down for an impulsive Schuffle. And a guitarist and singer, which runs the whole emotional crown. Live this band must be absolutely outrageous when you can close out their studio productions.
If I can not understand why some writing colleagues come up with the idea, they would sound like Pearl Jam at a beach party after Eddie Vedder has become the surfer. Since I lack a little understanding for the whole contemporary surfer scene. Echoes of Jack Johnson is heard in various reggae-echoes well. But they might as well be attributed to the influence of The Police or The Clash. For here no hippie bliss is felt in songs such as Sweet as the Sky or Sex In The Morning. This is driving Mucke grooving funk rock at its finest.
Who wants to help Soul of the River, which the band offers a whole range of ancillary facilities. This is from the free distribution of their songs to friends via the turning of videos for her songs up to the nerves of journalists and other people who could make the group better known. In any case, but you should take the time and listen to the 19 songs they have been available on the web. Because it's definitely worth it.

We had a blast Saturday when we played three shows in one day. This Thursday at 2:30 is our return to Sherman Indian High School in Riverside. Last time was way fun, so we're pretty stoked to be playing again. Then we're going to the studio to master the album. This means we're seriously almost done. Saturday at 10:00 we're playing a Relay for Life at Scripps College in Claremont CA, then I'm gonna take the band to the Folk Music Center where Ben Harper grew up, so we can trip out on the world instruments. Then we're going to play Mill Creek Cattle Co. in Mentone CA (next to Redlands) that night with two of our favorite bands, GrooveSession and The Generation! Now this will be awesome. GrooveSession is a funky jazz jam trio and The Generation is Straight up Rock and Roll.

What's happening?
We're pretty stoked to let you guys know that we're playing "Good Morning San Diego" this Saturday January 30, 2010 at 9:40 a.m. Channel 9 KUSI. We're going to play some songs and do an interview.
Steve and Rene really want to play "Sex in the Morning" but we're not going to, I want the station to ask us to come back. Steve was even suggesting we change it to "She loves Eggs in the Morning" I still don't think that's gonna fly. I know that's not very rock and roll of me. Please don't go telling them that we should have played "Sex in the Morning", they'll keep rubbing it in, and I'll get mad and there will be all this band drama, and caviar will be thrown everywhere. The band will break up and it will be all your fault.
I should really just make up this story to tell you all. Like how we got in an argument with the program director which ended in beer bottles thrown, because he didn't want us to play it, but we played it anyway, with fireworks shooting off from our amps catching the backdrop on fire while we're rocking out on top of the news desk in Kiss makeup, spitting blood on the reporters……..hey there's an idea!
Kiss Makeup and spitting blood to the tune of "Sweet as the Sky" would be strangely bizarre….....
Talking Steve into putting on Kiss makeup is going to be very difficult.

We're playing that morning to plug the show we're playing that same night at Dream Street. in Ocean Beach.. This show's gonna be badass. We'll play Sex in the Morning that evening.

Inland Empire Weekly Article
Soul of the River
By: Alex Distefano

ZIPCODE: Riverside.

BEEN AROUND THE BLOCK: The band's original incarnation took shape in 2004. Its current lineup of Rene Felix, Steve Hansen and Brett Dawson has been in effect since '06.

FOR FANS OF: The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jack Johnson, Sublime, Lenny Kravitz or Ben Harper.

LATEST SPINS: A full-length album—three years in the making, so you know it's gonna be good—is set to street in either October or November.

ON THE STAGE: The band has played all over, from Back to the Grind and Lake Alice in downtown Riverside, to Shamrocks in Chino Hills.

YOUR TWO CENTS: "We have a funky rock groove sound that is all our own. There are no guitar solos, or solos of any kind, on any of our songs. We have a great vibe and put on a great live show. We're your new favorite band as soon as you give us a listen."

WHY YOU SHOULD CARE: These guys don't do it for fame and fortune—the band's love of the music runs neck-and-neck with giving to a darn good cause. Soul of the River participates in the annual "IE Rock for the Cure," a benefit for the American Cancer Society. Plus, consider yourselves unworthy as this outfit was recently feted as the "Best Classic Rock" band during this year's Inland Empire Music Awards.

THE IE LOCAL MUSIC SCENE ROCKS BECAUSE: "Everyone involved, the people and the bands are all doing it purely for the love of music. Riverside's not gonna make you famous. There's a strong camaraderie between the bands and the people involved in the scene out here. It's amazing how good the bands are, half of my all-time favorite bands are from here; so many of them have great albums it's crazy. The problem is the average Joe doesn't realize that he/she can see their favorite band they haven't discovered yet for $5 down the street instead of paying $60 and driving into L.A. to see the Foo Fighters. I'm not talking about just us, I mean no matter what kind of music you listen to, there is a band in the IE playing locally that is freakin' awesome and will blow your mind. You just have to find it."

Hey we wanted to leave a quick note and let you all know that we unbelievably have something to sell!

The Soul of the River T-Shirts are here!
Right now we only have men's extra large in black.
We have other sizes, colors and women's shirts being made as we speak. They will be available to order sometime next week.

We also have a DVD of an old show we did in January of 2006 for sale as well.
We gave this DVD away free to everyone on the mailing list in 2007, so if you've been on the mailing list for a while, you may already have it.

It's all at

We're off to the studio tonight. Rene's going to track some Congas and we'll hear the final mixes for most of the album.

Great Blog Review and the Winner of the Song Naming Contest!
Whats up Party People!
Thanks for voting on the new song title, you guys are awesome! The winner is "Glimpses in the Rearview Mirror" which our myspace friend Nichole came up with. We're going to the Rec Room studio Friday to finish it and we will email her a mp3 of the song.

Then Wednesday we're going to Sound Sanctuary studios to do the final or super semi final mixes on the album.

Also Melissa and Rob pointed out to us that they discovered us through the Shades of Grey Blog. And it's a great review of our music! It was written in May, but we just found out about it now. Its way cool to stumble across someone writing good things about our tunes. You have to check it out.

Thanks for digging our tunes, we have more to come around the corner.

Vote on the title for our next song!
Wassup Party People!
I told Steve and Rene I was going to call them "Party People" from now on. They thought it was lame. Don't you forget it, Soul of the River will bring "Party People" back!
The last message we provided you with the lyrics to a new song we're tracking and asked you to suggest titles. We got the titles in and we're going to let you vote which one it should be. YOU BETTER NOT PICK ONE THAT SUCKS!! I'm kidding, we think all of them are awesome. The password is "Soul of the River" So here's the poll:

(I can't post poll here it is on our myspace blog where I am copying all of these old blogs from)

The poll ends on the 24th, then we'll let you know what the new title is. If you choose wrong it will go on your permanent record. Here's the lyrics:

Tearing out the driveway in the pouring rain
Sing a song of heartbreak I'm so full of pain

Ghosts on the highway and the blackened sun
Thunderclap of lightning and the engines hum

You changed, everything we had before is gone
How easy you move on
And I'll try everything I can to make things right
but I'm all out of time

Flying down the highway tearing sheets of rain
thunderstorm and darkness come to greet my pain

screeching round the bend in a full on slide
woman break a man when her love has died

you've changed everything we had before was gone
how easy you move on
and I'll try everything I can to make things right

Said her love was gone
and I was never home
late nights with the guys
I flip into the sky
tumble down the bank
never-ending nights
never stopped to think
cigarettes and beer
I wasted all these years
sweetheart don't you cry
Don't you waste your tears
All the love I have
I give it to you dear
My selfish ways now they disappear
quickly move along
go find a love that's strong
love opens up and lifts me in her womb

You name our new song!
Heeeeeeeeeeeeyy yoooooooooooooouuuuuuuuu……

We have another song that we're tracking in the studio, and once again we'd like you to give us the title. The lyrics are below.

I know this is crazy but we have two facebook pages. One that we really dig is hosted by ILike, but in order to add us you have to sign up with iLike and lots of people don't want to deal with that, so we set up a second Facebook page hosted by Facebook at :

So if you're on Facebook, please take a second to add us. It makes us feel special. And while you're at it add us on the other one too because we still think that one is cooler.

This new song has got a very Led Zeppelin, Black Crowes vibe to it. So check out the lyrics below and email us with what you want to call the song. The Title that we like the most wins, and will be the title of the song. If we decide to keep the song under wraps for whatever reason we will still email the winner an MP3 of the song.

I flip into the sky
tumble down the bank

Album Cover Ideas? New song posted.
'Sup FOOL!
How are you all doing? We uploaded "My Rebecca" onto myspace, last fm, reverbnation etc, for free download, so go download it, add it to your playlists, feed it whatever..

We are also playing an American Cancer Society Relay for Life in Corona CA Saturday June 27, 2009. From 5-6 All ages. Santana Park . See for details.

So we went to the studio last Wednesday, and Phil (Sound Sanctuary Studios) showed us what he's been working on, and we were astonished how good everything sounded. It was cool because Jeff Moody our original drummer stopped by, so it was like having the complete Soul of the River there to hear it. Phil gave us a cd and we've got to review it and make any notes for him to edit/mix. We are really really close to final mastering and being done.

But we still don't have any artwork for the album cover.

I'm a decent artist so I can put together about anything, we just don't have any ideas. You should tell us any ideas that you think would make a good album cover for our album. You don't need to be an artist. Just explain to us any ideas of what you think would be cool. If you're an artist and you would like your art to be our album artwork, please email us a link or the picture or whatever. If we use your artwork, we wouldn't go ahead with anything without your approval.

We just want to stay away from the standard cover picture of the band standing against a brick wall looking mean. We actually don't really want a picture of us at all on the cover. (We're so totally incredibly handsome, that it would distract people from the music) But we're cool with a picture of us on the cover if you have a good idea involving one.

New song up on Facebook! "My Rebecca"
Hey Hey Hey!
Whats happening everyone? We went to Phil's studio last night and he showed us some more songs mixed down, and they sound amazing! But what you really want to know is…There's a new song up available for free download! posted today on Facebook! "My Rebecca" You may remember a few months back we re-wrote the lyrics to "We've Gone Crazy" and sent you all the lyrics and asked you to submit what you think should be the name. We got a ton of great ideas, but our friend Margie suggested "My Rebecca" as it was the anniversary of her sister's passing when she saw the lyrics, and she said so many elements of the song totally reminded her of her sister. It looked like the song was about Rebecca, we just didn't know it yet. So here it is This song is for you Rebecca, Margie and family.

Here are the lyrics:

Tomcat stares into the high grass
Song of leaves float on like a cool breeze
Soft magnolia nights

Porchswing groans and creaks the evening
Old quilt would hold their warming sweet souls
Loving afterglow

She would shine like the world now
Make the whole town
Smile and sigh lost in her eyes

And her laugh would warm your soul now
Sweet golden somehow
Neverending skies in her blue eyes

It scares him when those feelings well in
Sits and stares across the old dirt road
Rows of pecan grove

The moonlight glows on like a porchlight
Breaks apart that old pecan grove
How they stand alone

And she would light up a room now
He cant explain how
She was so fine life was so kind

It rushes in like she's there now
The smell of her hair now
Sitting on the swing crickets would sing

Every Sunday his daughter calls in, he says he's happy alone
But the truth is darling he really can't let her go

And she knew he loved her with his heart and soul
Loved her right while she grew old
Always by her side

He goes back he thinks back on those old times
It seemed like such a simpler life the world he saw as a child

We won "Best Classic Rock Band" in the 2009 IE Music Awards!
Current mood:stoked
Last Friday we won for the "Best Classic Rock" category for the IE Music awards. We've been rehearsing every night since so I haven't had time to post this. We are definitely stoked to have won. Our Brothers the Generation also won "Best Indie rock" and "Best Live Band" We had a great time, and met alot of cool people. Steve wasn't able to make it. We're totally in the clouds about winning.

We didn't expect to win and were totally caught off guard. Here's a quick video of us accepting the award.

In case you cant understand: Brett says, "First off i want to thank those guys over there for losing their minds about everything" referring to Buddha Bomb who cheered like crazy for everyone, then he says, "I would like to thank God, my wife, and Phil O'Keefe at Sound Sanctuary Studios for working the magic" that's where it gets cut off on the video. Then he hands the mike to Rene and he says, "Thank You! I don't know what to say" (we were totally caught off guard and hadn't prepared speeches)

Special to The Press-Enterprise
The Generation plays Lake Alice Trading Co. in Riverside on Sunday.
About a year ago, Riverside bands The Generation and Soul of the River got together for a last-minute show at Back to the Grind in Riverside , hoping that with donations at the door, they could raise money for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.
Even with putting the show together quickly, they managed to pull in $500.
This year, the IE Rock for the Cure is back, coming to Lake Alice Trading Co. in Riverside on Sunday.
The Generation and Soul of the River are on the bill, as well as the jazz/funk of Ontario band Groove Session, '80s classic from Roughhouse and the L.A.-based band Run Devil Run, who has toured with Tesla and opened for Bon Jovi.
"This year we decided to really push," said Dennis Gabriel of The Generation.
He said the goal is to raise $5,000 to be split between the Relay for Life events in Hemet , Perris and Riverside . All profits from the show are going to that cause.
4 p.m. Sunday, Lake Alice Trading Co., 3616 University Ave., Riverside, 951-686-7343, $10. Kids are allowed at the show until 7 p.m.
Check out The Generation's MySpace page for more information.

Below is a description of the bands Dennis from the Generation wrote up. (I added in the part about the Generation)
Run Devil Run - this band, who were formly Poets & Pornstars, is hands down one of my favorite bands Rocking today. They're fantastic players who play straight up Rock n Roll, which is exactly what I dig, and they put on one of the best live shows you will ever see.... period. If you knew and liked them when they were the Poets then you love them today. They've got a newly released CD out called "Five by Five" and I strongly recommend picking up a copy for yourselves. HUGE things are on the horizon for these cats, so come see them in an intimate club setting now because they'll be headlining stadiums before long.
The Generation- Straight up Rock and Roll says it all. This is our brother band, and one of my favorites of all time. Great original songs, great covers and one hell of a rockin' show! Our favorite shows are when we play with these guys, they're all great friends and incredible musicians.
Soul of the River - think Jack Johnson meets the Red Hot Chili Peppers mixed with a dash of The Shins and you'll have some idea as to the Rock stylings of SOTR. These cats are writing, recording and performing some of the most original new music I've heard in years, and quite honestly it is "eargasmic." We have a long history with these boys, in fact last year's Rock for the Cure started with just them and us teaming up to raise $$$ for the American Cancer Society. We're stoked they're back with us this year as it wouldn't be the same without them. I recommend going to YouTube and checking out their video for "Sex in the Morning" because it's as good as the song... and the song is fantastic.
Groove Session - these guys play a brand of Jazz, Rock, Pop, Soul fusion that is uniquely their own. Their skill as musicians is astounding, and somewhat frustrating since I've been musician for over 30 years and I'm still not as good as they are, and their live show will dazzel you. The fellas have been playing shows all over So Cal promoting their latest CD "Flying Burrito" which is a fantastic disk, so be sure you pick up a copy.
Rouhhouse - if you're a fan of Classic Rock, then you're going to love these guys. I've seen them live only a couple of times, but they have knocked me out each time. These guys play everything from Rush to Van Halen to Journey etc., and nail it every single time. Don't get me wrong, they're not a "Tribute Band" but they do play faithful renditions of the original songs. Each member of the band is an exceptional musician, and as a guitar player myself I can tell you firsthand that their guitarist Moke is one the best players around. I'm very pleased to have them on this years Rock for the Cure lineup.
You can find each of these bands in our top friends, and I hope you'll go check them out and do an add request if you're not already a friend.

Thanks! and Huge show coming up for ACS.
Hi we totally wanted to thank everyone who came out to the show last night, what a great turnout! We totally had fun, and the great sound system made it even better. I wanted to list everyone personally, but there's no way I can do it without forgetting somebody. But thank you so much.
We're kind of chillin on shows to get new material dialed in, but we're way excited abour a show we're playing in May for the American Cancer Society with our brothers The Generation, and Groove Session, plus an amazing band from LA called Run Devil Run. They used to be called "Poets and Pornstars" and I have seen them before and it was one of the best shows I've seen. But it's going to be at Lake Alice in Riverside May 3, and it will be a benefit for ACS that will be the show of all shows. I'm sure we'll play some shows between now and then, but this ones gonna be big.
Also we're moving along on the album, and we'll have T-Shirts up for sale soon. But nonetheless thank you all for your support. We've been talking about ways we can maybe make a video podcast or free live CD for people on the mailing list for all the people that live too far away to catch a show. We'll get out there for a tour when we can afford it we promise! If we get picked up by a label, it may be sooner than later, who knows. Thats about it, also make sure to smile and laugh more, even at people that aren't funny but think they are.

X-103.9 and the Song Title is Selected.

Happy New Year!
We hope you all had a safe and happy new year, and 2009 is a great year for you. My Dad told me 2009 will be a great year for us. We're releasing our album this year so hopefully he's right.
A while back we sent off the new lyrics to a song that was called "We've Gone Crazy" and asked everyone to submit your ideas for what should be the new title. Well the winner is "My Rebecca". A friend of ours said that so many elements of the song reminded her of her sister that passed away and suggested the title. The band got together and went over all of the suggested titles, and felt that one was the best and most appropriate for the song.
Also KCXX or X-103.9, a station out here in California just notified us that they will start playing "Sex in the Morning" on the Local Band Spotlight show Sunday nights between 11-12 p.m. (Pacific Time) for a few weeks. So make sure to listen for it on 103.9 FM or Streaming on then at the top they have a button to stream. But most importantly, do us a favor and call in and request "Sex in the Morning" at (909) 890-1010. Tell your friends!

Happy Holidays!
Happy Holidays everyone! Thanks so much for all of your love and support this year! Hopefully our tunes brought a smile to your faces and an extra kick into your groove this year. Maybe our songs inspired you to run butt naked through the streets screaming our songs. That's cool too, whatever floats your boat. But nonetheless thatk you all for your support and love and good vibes. Next years gonna be awesome! Make sure to do something cool for somebody random before the years over!

Hey the acoustic duo is back for one show! Tonight December 22, we're playing for the acoustic showdown at Gallagher's in ..:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Huntington Beach. They have a rule that it has to be acoustic and only two people. So Steve will be there watching and heckling us, but not playing. We're going to do the acoustic duo thing we did when Steve was gone. It's a contest and the winner of the finals gets $500 and some recording time.

Studio Update 3
Hi we're done with this round of the studio, and the songs sound awesome! We're way close to being done. "Right Right" and "The Last Song" are turning out amazing. Phil is doing an fantastic job with our songs, they are sounding incredible. In case you're wondering, we're recording at Sound Sanctuary Studios in ..Riverside, and Phil O'Keefe is the Engineer/Super Sound Maker. If you're looking for a studio, that's the place to go for the big studio sound without the price. We've gotta give Phil his props, he's like a fourth member.
So Steve and I tracked all of our vocals, and all of our instruments, so all that's left is editing/mixing and mastering. But as far as band members, our work is done. We also tracked "The Well", "Short Song" and "Catch A Day" and decided to put it on the album, although "Down By The River" "5 Souls", and "They Just Don't Get It" : aren't going to make the cut. We want the album to be great from beginning to end, and we feel those songs aren't strong enough. You can get a free download of "They just don't get it" on our soundclick page
Also I finally wrote lyrics for what was called "We've Gone Crazy". I wrote that song 3 years ago and could never get myself to write decent lyrics for it. I wrote some, and sang them in the studio and realized that I hated them. But now I have final lyrics, re-sang them, and we made the song sound less country. So we will be taking down "We've Gone Crazy" and replacing it with the new one, so if you want a copy, now's the time to download it. We will put the new version up when it's done. But we have no title, so we need you to give us the title:
Here are the lyrics:
Tomcat stares into the high grass
Song of leaves float on like a cool breeze
Soft magnolia nights
Porchswing groans and creaks the evening
Old quilt would hold their warming sweet souls
Loving afterglow
She would shine like the world now
Make the whole town
Smile and sigh lost in her eyes
And her laugh would warm your soul now
Sweet golden somehow
Neverending skies in her blue eyes
It scares him when those feelings well in
Sits and stares across the old dirt road
Rows of pecan grove
The moonlight glows on like a porchlight
Breaks apart that old pecan grove
How they stand alone
And she would light up a room now
He cant explain how
She was so fine life was so kind
It rushes in like she's there now
The smell of her hair now
Sitting on the swing crickets would sing
Every Sunday his daughter calls in, he says he's happy alone
But the truth is darling he really can't let her go
And she knew he loved her with his heart and soul
Loved her right while she grew old
Always by her side
He goes back he thinks back on those old times
It seemed like such a simpler life the world he saw as a child
So what should be the title?

Studio Day 2
Things are moving in the studio. Friday night we did drum tracks and guitar amd bass tracks for "Right Right" and drums and bass for "the Well" and "Weve gone crazy"

Saturday we got everything but vocals done for "the well" and it sounds awesome!!

A while back we recorded "we've gone crazy" and I wrote the lyrics the day I sang them in the studio, and I was cringing when I sang them, they were terrible. Those are the ones that are on the version that's on our myspace player etc. So it's been a year now, and I still havent got lyrics for that song yet. I did write some in the studio a few months ago that I was happy with, but I lost them. All this month I've been procrastinating on writing lyrics and like a term paper, I put it off. I still don't have lyrics for them yet. But the cool thing is, yesterday we were able to re-master it and take out some of the elements like the country sounding guitars etc. So that was awesome!

Rene and I have been talking about cutting the album down to 13 songs, and if we do, we'll be like 95% finished with the album. So we have to sell Steve on the idea.

Today Steve and I will be mostly doing guitar and bass tracking for "Short Song" "Catch A Day" "Last Song" and maybe "Down by the River".
Well that's it, I just wanted to guive you an update in case you were wondering. Evreything sounds phenominal I can't wait until you all have heard it.

November 9, 2008

Studio Day 1
We're going into the studio today. For 5 days.people keep asking if we'll be done with the album now, and no we won't. But we will be darn close. Tonight we will be doing drum tracks for "Right Right" "We've Gone Crazy" and "Going out of my head" or "the well" we haven't really named that one yet.

I'm sick as a dog too, perfect timing.

I just wanted to give you all an update. We'll keep you informed better than the BBC.

KINDRED SPIRITS: Minutemen, Jack Johnson, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rolling Stones, Sublime, Dispatch, Firehose, Pearl Jam, jamming, real Riverside people making real Riverside music, the Santa Ana River.

If only session time at Riverside's Sound Sanctuary was lay-away-able, Soul of the River might have already mastered its 16-song self-titled debut, might've already been sharing "pure eargasmic joy" with us 909ers from the depths of the good ol' Santa Ana. It's a magic river, Mama, or at least we gather there's something in that waterway nourishing the Inland Empire (hence the band's name). Either way, music is a labor of love for this trio and work a labor of affording all the music-making, even if it means driving a jalopy (Hyundai) until all debts are paid and the album's finally made. The business of recording's seriously paycheck expending, so it's a good thing SOTR's not in it for the bread—the whole band just likes to jam.

"We would sit around at parties and the guys would break out guitars, and rap . . . it was improvisational rap, or free styling," singer Brett Dawson says. "Once people got enough alcohol in their systems, they'd start singing, and we'd make up songs on the spot. One of our friends talked us into rehearsing regularly—a new concept to us—and it kind of took off from that."

So SOTR's been called "funky rock" or "just a jam band" since forming in 2002, but, really, they're all about soul—and a little improvisation, termed "musical ESP." It's as "if Jack Johnson wrote songs and the Red Hot Chili Peppers played them, with Eddie Vedder singing, except I'm not that good," Dawson says. True, songs like "Sweet as the Sky" and "We've Gone Crazy" remind us of a Pearl Jam beach party, if Vedder turned surfer-bro (brohan?), that is, but we'd nip the Curious George affiliation in the bubbly-toe.

Nearly a year's passed during SOTR's endless save/record/save process, garnering sufficient material (including jams about real Riverside people) for a double-disc—but one's proved trouble enough. At this point only money-will-tell when the unusually long debut will, well, debut. Luckily, for those 909ers who need the "eargasmic joy" now, freebie samplers (a five-song-EP released in 2006) can be easily collected by show or mail and downloaded on just about every music networking-site (ILike, Soundclick, Facebook, you name it).

Meanwhile we await the newest results of the Wash (doesn't anyone call the Santa Ana that, anymore?) and hope bread floats to the soul of Riverside—you know, to feed the jam.

We're the Band of the Week and in the top 16 on Mark and Brian's Battle of the Fans!
'Sup Yall!
We entered our "Sex in the Morning" video in the KLOS Mark and Brian contest and I received a phone call yesterday that we are in the top 16! This is Huge! Friday morning they decide amongst themselves the top 8, then they post them on their website and visitors vote. So if we make it to the top 8 we will need you to vote for us, and get your friends to vote as well.
We'll let you know (and see the video) as soon as we find out. Then the top 4 compete live at the Key Club live on the morning show, and the winner opens for Lynyrd Skynyrd at Soboba. So cross your fingers. I also want to thank Nick Masarro for making the awesome video.
Also grab this week's IE Weekly that comes out today because we're the band of the week! If you're outside of the Inland Empire you can read the article online here:
Jessica and Kady Bell wrote a great article, we're definitely stoked on that. Actually, I'm definitely stoked, I haven't had a chance to tell Steve and Rene about the article or the Mark and Brian contest, so you know before them!
Straight for '88 you suckas,

Press Enterprise Article
It was printed a while ago, and I lagged on posting it , because I was hoping I could include the Adobe file, and tried and tried, but I can't. But anyways here's the writeup from the Press Enterprise:
BAND PROFILE: Soul of the River
The Press-Enterprise
Who: Brett Dawson, vocals and guitar; Steve Hansen, bass; and Rene Felix, drums.
From: Riverside
Formed: 2002
Sounds like: Fans of bands including Jimmie's Chicken Shack, the Black Keys and the Red Hot Chili Peppers can dig these guys. Throw in a touch of jam band-ness (in a Jack Johnson way, not in a bad way), and there you have it. Listen to "BSide to Honky Tonk Woman," and be sure to check out "We've Gone Crazy" -- it includes a lyric about Wheat Thins.

Soul of the River is made up of, from left, Steve Hansen, bass; Brett Dawson, guitar and vocals; and Rene Felix, drums. (Special to The Press-Enterprise)
Releases: A full-length album is coming in 2008.
Sample the music:
Web site:
Riverside's Soul of the River has its roots in parties, which makes sense when you hear the groove-laden rock sound of the band.
"We would always jam -- just goof around at parties and stuff," said singer-guitarist Brett Dawson.
Sitting around the fire, the friends would just play songs and try to get everybody to join in. Those impromptu jams turned into Soul of the River.
The band has been working on its full-length album at Sound Sanctuary Recording Studio in Riverside.
Dawson said the plan is to have 16 tracks when it's finished. The band has been saving up money and recording a couple of songs at a time.
Whenever the band finishes some songs, it will put together a CD to hand out for free at shows and pretty much wherever it goes.
"Most of the songs I think I just write on my own -- a bare-bones sort of thing," Dawson said.
The band then works it out in practice.
"We're really, really good at jamming," he said, quickly adding that Soul of the River is not the typical jam band.
"It's more like if a Beastie Boys DJ were to play a set and go from song to song," he said. "There aren't 15-minute guitar solos."

The Man behind our Incredible recordings

Phil O'Keefe at Sound Sanctuary studios is a wizard. He's the one that recorded Sweet as the Sky, Sex in the Morning, As I Sing and We've Gone Crazy as well as the rest of our future album. (We're still working on it). He's the reason thsese songs sound so good.

1st Live show for free streaming or download!
Go to and scroll down and go to angels 12-6-07. We'd put it up on myspace, but it is too big (23 minute show)
I got a cool digital recorder that makes good stereo recordings so this is the first of tons of live shows, jams etc. that we will be uploading for your downloading pleasure.
This show is at Angels in Corona CA December 12 2007.
Steve's not in this one, so we have no bass player, and we're playing as the funky acoustic duo. Brett is playing the bass and guitar at the same time so that's why you sometimes hear bass.
For best results listen very Loud.
We hope you dig it.

The Album
Hi How's everyone doing? We went to the studio this last weekend again. Saturday we finished the mastering of "Sex in the Morning" which is now up on our page. If you haven't heard it, check it out! Sunday we tracked "Friends" which we'll keep under wraps until the album comes out.

We give all of our songs away for free downloads or on CD's at our shows (Free Downloads are at ) But we're not going to give the whole album out free. We have about 16 songs on the upcoming album, and we'll probably have two more that we will release for free, but to hear the rest you gotta buy the album. Where can you get the album you say? Nowhere. It's not done yet. We don't know when it will be done, we were hoping for the end of the year, but we still have a long ways to go.

So far we have four songs done:

Sweet as the Sky
As I Sing Here
Sex in the Morning
We've gone crazy.

We've gone crazy we are going to re-record because I'm not feeling the country vibe of it, and it's too slow. So we're going to re-record that one to be closer to what how we play it live, and change the lyrics. But if you want to hear it in its current state, listen to the newest episode of the Furtive Wangler Podcast, at
The rest of the songs that will be on the album are: (in no particular order)

5 Souls
Catch a Day
Daylight Honey (new version)
B-Side to Honky Tonk Woman (new version)
Short Song
I feel Alright
They Just Don't Get It (new version)
And of three songs that you have never heard before.

I wonder if any of you care about this. I know some of you live too far to see us play and have no idea what these songs are, I'm sorry I wish we could get out there. If you sign the mailing list we'll send you a free CD and a DVD of a show, just email me your address and email address, but it takes about a month for me to send out the DVD's because I get busy with shows etc.

So anyways back to the studio, we have Steve's Bass parts done and the Drums done for every song, but the reason we're lagging on getting the album done, is I have to save up for the studio time. We don't have a label, or any backing, so it takes me a minimum of 2 months to save up the money for studio time. Otherwise the album would be done already. But the album is turning out to be a masterpiece. Every song is great, we're crazy for putting 16 songs on a self released album, and trust me there are lots of songs that didn't make the cut. We would have less songs on the album because it would be done faster, but we can't trim the fat anymore, every song has to be on there. Oh yeah there's a ton of surprises in the album as well.

Wierdos in our Garage.
We were asked earlier to write an interesting story about a show or road trip and I couldn't really think of anything. Most all shows are the same, sometimes its packed, sometimes its empty, sometimes you're playing horribly and the crowd thinks you're awesome, and other times you're playing great and the crowd could care less. But I thought of a few things that were worth mentioning.

Ever since we first started rehearsing at our new rehearsal space, (which isn't in the best part of town) we've had a constant visiting weirdo hanging out at every rehearsal. Its like when you're living with roommates, you always have that guy on the couch. You have a buddy that asks to crash on your couch "Just for a couple weeks" and a couple weeks turns into six months, when you finally get them to get their own place, a week later you have another friend asking to crash on the couch "just for a few weeks". It's sort of like that.
We seem to attract weirdos when we rehearse. And don't get me wrong, they're always very good-natured wierdos, but they all have a few things in common. They talk incessantly. Nonstop nonsensical gibberish. They're always there right before the band shows up, waiting with a few tall cans, already well on their way to being wasted, talking faster than Speedy Gonzales. Before, after, and especially between songs, when you absolutely must to get to work, they start talking about nothing and never ever stop. And for a while you're just struggling to understand what the hell they're talking about. No matter who they are, they're always really nice, so you don't want to be a dick. But after a while you just have to completely ignore them while they continue talking and get started on another song. And at the end of the night you've only got half what you wanted accomplished, because most of the time you were trying to make sense of what this maniac is saying, smiling, acting like you understand. They're going on enthusiastically about how you should go from "that one part, into another thing that goes dah dah dah, then do a Queesnryche-kinda thing". Queensryche?!
They ALWAYS want to play the drums, never know how and never ever take the hint that its time for them to stop. Rene has to hound them for 20 minutes to get them off his stool. They change the dials on your amp to "fix your tone", so you have nothing but treble so it sounds like a tin can, or are wasted, knocking crap over, or singing ideas they have to add to your songs that were written two years ago, that sound like a cat in heat with a serious love of 80's glam-rock. Or the best yet, is when one tries to work their way into being your new singer/guitarist/bass player/manager even after you sit down with them and try to explain that you're not looking for new members. And the thing is, once one stops coming around, a week later another shows up, first appearing normal, knocking on the garage door, saying, "Hey sounds great! I'm digging you guys, can I hang out and have a beer?" And then you find them waiting out front the next day, and the next, and before you know it they're crashing on your couch.

Show Saturday, Songwriting Finals, and a Podcast!
How You all doing? We're back! We have a show Saturday, "They Just Don't Get It" was featured on the Musicians Cooler Podcast (Money Making Music Websites episode) and the Lyrics to "Right Right" is in the finals for the American Songwriter Magazine's lyric writing contest! So first off:
This Saturday April 21
Soul of the River
14269 7th Street
Victorville CA 92392
10 P.M.
21 and over

Make sure to check out the podshow The Musicians Cooler at it is a great podcast about promoting bands, managing etc. and of course one of my (Brett) favorites
Also we are going into the studio at the beginning of May to start recording our first American classic album. So we won't be playing many shows for a while so you have to catch them while you can.
Here's the lyrics to "Right Right" that are in the finals for the American Songwriter Magazine's contest. We haven't played it in a while because I went through a series of revisions, and we've finally decided to just play it the way we used to. If it ain't broke don't fix it. We might play it this Saturday, but you never know unless you go. Nonetheless here are the lyrics:
Right Right
By Soul of the River
Towns wrapped up in chains
Ain't got no name
Everything's all the same
We got sprawl like a spreading disease
Through the cities
Multiplex movie screens
And it's all around
Stucco and brown
Exact same restaurant
From town to town
And these Mom and pops
Make cool little shops
All these hopes and dreams
they put a stop
Yeah Tract Homes and cell phones
Soccer mom with a great new pair of
New Ring tone
Credit cards and a brand new bank loan
same house new day
toy box or boat
parked on display
in the driveway for the weekend,
new turf gonna get some sprinklin
Right right
Worry how you flurry
Keeping up with the trends
Display the name brands
So you know whos your friend
..[endif]-->Right right
Hurry how you scurry
Gotta get what you need
Brand new SUV
And flat screen tv
Runny kinda funny
Keeping up with the elite
Guzzle need a muzzle
Feed all your gluttony
Well It's a damn shame
The land has been maimed
Corporate names
aren't only ones to blame
It don't smell so right
We put up no fight
Smog drowns the sight
Apathy all the time
So who's to blame
Its all the same
Afraid of any change we want the chain

Empire Music

Buy 'em by the sack: hot tasty nuggets of sonic goodness you need to crank up/link to/check out/gawk at, in the IE and beyond….
See what happens when you advertise in the Weekly? The editor finds out about you, clicks up your myspace, and kinda likes you and your funky backbeats, spry guitars and spiritual, er, spiritualness. Any band into Zeppelin and the Minutemen are fine by us (not sure about that Dave Matthews Band name drop on the resume' though). Huge in Louisville! (Louisville?) But why the godawful time slot? Turns out it's the finals for the Best Live Band category at this year's Inland Empire Music Awards, slated for January 26 at the casino Morongo Key Club (look for a big article in a few weeks). Is drinking even allowed at 3 p.m.?

Full Value Review of our Nov 3, 2006 performance
Soul of the River, Funk The Band, The Chain at Java Joz Nov 3 2006
January 6, 2007 by Bill Gould, Publisher.
Soul of the River:
"Rock n' Soul" is a pretty radical combination of music. It is even better when it is coming from Soul of the River. SOTR play very easy listening when they are live and on CD. You can get yourself a free copy of their self made CD at any show that you attend to, also. They also offer free stickers too. Soul of the River sounds similar to Counting Crows, with the same kind of beat and all that jazz.
"easy listening, counting crowes?!"

Louisville Music News Review
Soulful. And Funky. And Rockin'.
Soul Of The River (Independent)
Soul Of The River
By Leslie Ritchie
"Oh to think Mr. McDoodle / What will happen if there's no music for your noodle? / Don't you fret, the funky rock grooves I will deliver / I will bring forth, The Soul Of the River."
Formed in 2002 in Southern California, these funk rockers create one unusual sound that will grab your attention in a second. The band consists of three effective guys: Brett Dawson, the man who brings the melodic vocals and guitar playing to this single. Rene Felix is the drummer, while Steve Hansen rocks out on bass.
This self-titled release has three very upbeat, blood-pumping tunes, so the music scene can get prepared for their upcoming album.
The first song, "B-side to the Honky Tonk Woman," put a smile on my face. It's a different sound that cannot be explained. The sound is one of a kind, that could make everyone from hard rockers to country fans rock out and get down.
"Daylight Honey" would have to be the most outstanding song listened to. It's not your everyday love song, with the tune's higher beat and the more passionate lyrics. "They Just Don't Get It," the last track on the CD, is a little different then the others, reminding me of an upbeat remix of a television theme song.
Soul of the River has created an unusual blend of songs that will immediately grab the attention of all listeners. The music on this CD is highly addicting and recommended, because of the different sound and passion throughout the CD.
You can listen to the funky grooves of Soul Of the River online at

More songs for downloading, or listening.

Hi Its Soul of the River! We have some songs available for download or streaming at So download away, burn CDs, email mp3s to your friends, throw them out the window on the freeway, go crazy!

Okay stop! Youre so crazy.

Oh, also vote them as Hot so we move up the charts like Ricky Martin. The ones that sound like they were recorded in the studio, were done in the studio, and the ones that sound like they were recorded in a garage, were recorded in a garage. Im glad I could clarify that for you. We should have up a couple more this weekend. We dont have any shows scheduled because Im getting married in May, and I dont want to get overwhelmed. (I can hear Jeff screaming now, we had like 4 shows booked right before his wedding, sorry Jeff)

But after May well start booking more shows than you can shake your bon bon at.

July 13, 2006

Okay now that we actually have some news, we never update this thing. We're playing shows like crazy, and booking more, so please do what you can to make it to see us. We're recording a demo. It should be completed within a couple months. In the meantime, we have a CD of our interview and acoustic set we did on The Vinyl Hours radio Show on KUCR 88.3 FM (It's on every mon from 7-9, you can stream it on, so make sure to turn your TV off and tune in every Mon.) So if you missed the episode with us, let us know and we'll send you a CD. Also we have a CD we recorded in our garage of a rehearsal, that we give to friends, and if you'd like one don't be afraid to ask.

March 19, 2006

We have a new full time drummer, Rene Felix! We have jammed with Rene from time to time, through the years so we're excited to have him. We have been rehearsing overtime working on getting him dialed in, and fine tuning some of the songs and introducing new ones. Also we recorded a live 5 song CD live in the studio with our original Drummer Jeff Moody, the song list is: 1. Friends 2. They Just don't get t 3. As I Sing Here 4. B-Side to Honky Tonk Woman 5. I Feel Alright

January 18, 2006

We are getting close to finished with the home recording. Although we're close to getting done, it doesn't mean much, because every little thing friggin' takes forever. It's just the nature of recording when you don't know what you're doing. So far we have an new one Daylight Honey almost complete, and we haven't started with B-Side to Honky Tonk Woman. After we're done we will take them into a studio to have them mixed and mastered. Then we will order a pressing for our demo/1st EP. February we have Jeff sitting in for us, and we are playing Angels Roadhouse in Yucaipa, mostly be for fun. Jeff helped start the band and was in the band for so long, we would like to get down a recording of what we sound like with him. If the recording turns out decent we will order a small pressing, as a special EP for fans and friends. At that session we are not going to record our best songs, but we are going to focus on the songs that shine better live, where a track by track recording process would kill the vibe of the song. We plan on recording: She's My Babe, Friends, an new one Brett just finished, that will definitely get you grooving. As well as whatever else we feel like recording at the time. Maybe Folsom Prison Blues. Then we are going to start our search for another drummer. We'll get him dialed in and start playing shows regularly, and after May go into the studio on a piece by piece basis and start work on a full album. In the meantime we might play a show here or there, to give you all your jollies.

January 6, 2006

We are once again without a drummer. But in the meantime we are busily working on recording. No really. It's long overdue to get a good recording of some of our songs. So we have been focusing entirely on recording. We have two songs almost ready to be mastered and mixed the studio at the beginning of February with our original drummer, Jeff Moody to record some tracks. We have been talking of possibly playing a show or two in the meantime, and having Jeff of Rene fill in for us. We are not planning on looking for a permanent drummer until the recording is done, but if you know someone who would be great for us, let us know. As a side thing, I (Brett) am joining a hobby band with Jeff as well, so if you know of any musicians that may be interested in joining let us know, we will rehearse one day a week at Jeff's. So anyway, we just wanted to keep in touch and let you all know what we have been doing.

October 29, 2005

We have a new drummer, Colin Riner so say hello when you see him. We're working on home recording again, but I know you've heard that before. Jeff Moody just got married to the beautiful Julie Helms, so send your congratulations if you haven't already and a really expensive present as well! I (Brett) still Jam with Jeff on a regular basis, and we may get another project started. We're Playing Worthington's November, then plan one show in December, then we plan on scheduling a slew of shows in the new year. We're using the time Nov-Dec to record and work on an acoustic set.

July 23, 2005

It's been a while since we last played a show. We stopped scheduling shows way back, to make time to go to the studio, although we never made it. We played a few parties, but as far as public shows, we haven't done much. We have three new songs that will blow your minds. We had some shows scheduled, and if you have caught word of those, we have cancelled them. Jeff is taking a break from the band. With work, kids and planning a wedding, things were getting tough to juggle all that along with a band. So if you know of any drummers looking for a band, point them our way. Steve and I are trying out drummers as we speak. We have a keep and I'll just play a short solo opening set, Steve may join me. I'll be playing from 7:30-8:00 than after me is a great original band called Neon Fields. It's free, and all ages, check the website for more info. Other news, we finally have some music posted. The recordings are of a rehearsal, so the recording quality is far from the best, but at least it will satiate your Soul of the River tastebuds.

June 8, 2004

We have three new original songs that are incredible, we can't wait to play them for you. We are getting interviewed for Digress Magazine this Thursday, so look for us in ignore what I said before. We will I promise. I have some video clips of us live and a few songs to post for download or streaming on here but can't get it to work, If you have any ideas on how, let me know,

April 23, 2005

Since the last show at Universal Bar and Grill, we decided that we will not schedule any nice, relaxing, coming home to a normal life, not constantly working at being the greatest band in the history of the world. Steve used some leftover royalties from his previous band, Menudo, and spent the time in Bali. Jeff starred as Batman in the new Batman beginnings and as Darth Vader in the new Star Wars flick, both in costume only. Brett spent most of his time picking fights with junior high kids. We all got started rehearsing for the studio, when Brett got sick. We plan to get started a third time this week and have the demo recorded within a month.

Jan 24, 2005

We're going into the studio, to make a real CD, so you can brag and show your friends that you knew of us before them. Then they will ask for a copy and you will burn them a copy, instead of having them buy a real one from us, and you will never tell us, even ten years from now, although we wouldn't give a crap.

Jan 8, 2004

The Show at Pepito's went great, we wanted to thank everyone for coming out and having a great time. You guys ROCK!!!!

December 24, 2004

Still doing the home recording. Steve and Brett performed an open mic at Racers December 22, 2004, and had the crowd chasing them home screaming for more. They had to hide behind newspapers at a bus stop like the Beatles to get away. Brett did a solo acoustic open mic at the Coffee Depot Dec 23, 2004 and will have a live recording of the performance.

September 12, 2004

We are now recording studio quality recordings of our songs, which is very time consuming, so it will be a while until they are completed. And we are also recording live rehearsals, which will not sound as good, but we will at least have something for you to listen to until the studio tracks are done. Yeah I know I know, we lag. But Jeff is dilligently on our case to "Finish it already!". But if you haven't heard us, then when they are completed, you will see that we are truly as great as we say we are.

May 20, 2004

Brett and Steve are busy recording the rough tracks for some of the songs, so you can have something to listen to while you should probably be doing something more responsible.
